QC students 'supplied and ready' for a great year

Purchasing school supplies for students attending J.K. Hileman Elementary was made easier and more affordable this year thanks to the Queen City Churches Association.

At the bottom of each grade level’s school supply list were specific items that were purchased and contributed by the supportive outreach group. These supplies were picked up by the school, sorted, and waiting for students when they arrived on the first day of school.

In addition to the grade-level specific items that were donated by the Queen City Churches Association, other local churches, businesses, and individuals pitched in to make sure J.K. Hileman students started off the year with the tools that they would need for success.

Donna Hanner with the First United Methodist Church Volunteer Ministries made numerous trips to the school to ensure the student supply cabinet was stocked and ready for students who might show up on the first day of school in need of supplies.

Individuals including Freddy and Charlotte Brimer contributed to this effort by bringing in fully supplied backpacks for various grade levels. The local and main Texar offices also collected school supplies to be distributed amongst the local schools.

J.K. Hileman Elementary staff would like to commend the contributors for their commitment to the success of our students. Students, parents, and teachers are very appreciative for all of the school supplies that the campus received. These supplies will allow every student the opportunity to start the year in a positive way.

Backpack Program provides food for kids

A church-sponsored "Backpack Program" will feed many children throughout the school year who don’t get enough to eat at home, but organizers say it will take contributions from the community to help make the program a success.

When most people think of hungry children, they probably think of them being in a foreign country as shown often during the heart-wrenching commercials on television. Unfortunately, there are many children in this area who receive one good meal a day, and that is during school hours.

Thanks to members of Westside Baptist Church and program founder Beverly Pennington, children at Atlanta Primary School will not feel the emptiness of hunger when they are away from school.

Bags or backpacks filled with healthy meals and snacks to get through the weekends are anonymously sent home with the child on Friday, and are returned to the school on Monday.

"It’s not that we chose just to help in an Atlanta school, we just don’t have the resources to sponsor all the other schools," said Penny Nolte, a volunteer for the program.

According to Nolte, it takes some $20 a month to feed a child through the program.

"I’m hoping other churches will join in the program so we can help out other schools in the area," said Rick Grandmaison, also a volunteer.

Enrollment forms for the Backpack Program can be found in the packet given to all students by school officials at the beginning of the year.

Anyone interested sponsoring a child or school may send a check to Westside Baptist Church, 714 W. Main St., Atlanta, Texas 75551, and specify "Backpack Program."
